SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 9,:

Life was hit due to a spontaneous shutdown in Kashmir to commemorate the hanging anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guroo on Tuesday.

Guroo was hanged 8 years ago for his alleged involvement in Parliament attack that killed 14 people, including five gunmen. Court in its verdict had maintained that Guroo will be executed to satisfy the ‘collective conscience’ of the people.

His execution during Omar Abdullah led Government in Jammu and Kashmir led to days of deadly protests in Valley with people demanding that his mortal remains, currently buried within the jail compound, be bring back to Kashmir.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed while private tuition centres also remained shut.

Skeletal movement of transport was observed on the roads; however, in many parts of Valley including Srinagar, public transport was seen plying normally.

There was complete shutdown in city centre Lal Chowk. Reports of shutdown also poured from other parts of Kashmir, however, in some parts partial shutdown was observed. (KNT)
