SOPORE, FEBRUARY 12 :

The Sopore administration Firday said that the ban on horse-driven carts (tongas) in north Kashmir’s Sopore shall be applicable to municipal limits only while as outside Municipal limits no such ban shall be applicable.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore (ADC) Sopore Parvez Sajad Ganai told Kashmir Despatch that the ban on horse driven carts shall be implemented within the municipal limits for the smooth traffic movement.

“The Sopore town was witnessing massive traffic jams and congestion due to tongas and street vendors. Emergency services including ambulances were getting stuck in these jams creating massive problems to patients and locals,” ADC Sopore said.

He said that any Tonga owner found not obeying the orders shall be dealt according to the law.

ADC Sopore said that for the betterment of town and especially for smooth traffic movement this initiative of banning tonga movement with municipal limits was taken.

Earlier few news outlets while quoting DC Baramulla had published that there is no ban on Tonga movement.

“The district administration and Sopore administration is working together and there is no such confusion. We reiterate that the ban on Tonga movement is only applicable within muncipal limits of Sopore,” ADC added.
