A 26-year-old girl committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at her home in Ahamsharief village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Wednesday evening.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the girl (name withheld) consumed some poisonous substance at her residence following which the family members rushed her to sub-district hospital Bandipora, where she died.
He said that the reason for the suicide was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, police have taken cognisance of the matter and initiated investigation to ascertain the cause of her death—(KNO)

SRINAGAR JANUARY 13 :
To assess the situation arisen due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha today visited Srinagar and took stock of the measures undertaken for snow clearance and restoration of essential supplies across Kashmir.
The Lieutenant Governor received a firsthand appraisal of the response mechanism put in place to restore affected services, from the concerned officers in a meeting held here at Raj Bhavan.
The Lieutenant Governor sought a detailed report on the status of restoration works especially road, water, and power being carried out by different departments across Kashmir.
The Lt Governor was informed that the continuous snowing for the past few days has affected normal life throughout the Kashmir Valley, however, the administration, following the directions of the Lt Governor, had started restoration work on war footing from day one to ensure that people do not face any inconvenience.
The Lt Governor issued specific instructions to all the concerned officers, field-level officers to ensure swift completion of snow-clearance and dewatering of all lanes and by-lanes. He also directed them to monitor restoration efforts and ensure round-the-clock operations for the earliest possible restoration in areas where public services are still disrupted. He enjoined upon them to remain at the beck and call of the people and ensure an uninterrupted supply of essentials and healthcare facilities across the valley.
The Lt Governor directed senior officials to ensure adequate men and machinery for snow clearance of city lanes, village link roads and further asked them to ensure the team on the ground is functional round the clock to provide maximum relief to the common man.
The Lt Governor was informed that the power supply in all districts of Kashmir has been restored. It was given out that all 115 33KV lines stand restored and 255 receiving stations, except receiving station Machil, stands restored. It was also informed that 951 (11KV) feeders have been restored, while as out of 945 damaged DTs, 720 have been restored and the remaining shall be made functional soon.
Similarly, it was informed that the R&B department has cleared snow from 7892 km of road length out of a total of 8026 km across Kashmir, while some remote areas which witnessed heavy snowfall including roads in far-flung areas of Shopian, Budgam, and Kulgam are being cleared and will be made motorable by tomorrow.

M Raju, Secretary to the Government, Jal Shakti Department; Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar; Sh. Mohammad Aijaz, MD, KPDCL, besides Chief Engineers of PDD, PHE, R&B, Commissioner SMC, and other officers were present in the meeting.
Later, the Lieutenant Governor conducted a whirlwind tour of Srinagar city to inspect the snow clearance and other restoration works. The Lieutenant Governor visited Lal Chowk, TRC crossing, Sonwar, Dalgate, Nishat, foreshore road, Hazratbal, Saida Kadal, Rainawari, Khanyar, Dastageer Sahib, Babadam, Monawarabaad, and other areas of Srinagar City and took the firsthand assessment of the situation.
At Lalit Ghat, the Lt Governor interacted with the Shikara walas and enquired about the present tourism scenario. He also assured early redressal of the genuine issues put forth by them during the interaction .
Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday received the first consignment of 1.46 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccine from Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), officials said.
While 79,000 doses were received here for vaccination of nearly 60,000 healthcare workers in the Kashmir valley, 67,500 vaccines have been received in the Jammu division, they said.
The officials said the vaccination will begin on Saturday at 30 centres across the union territory.
“To begin with, inauguration ceremonies will be held at SKIMS hospital Soura in Srinagar and Government Medical College Jammu, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will be present,” they said.
Besides these two, there are 14 immunisation centres each in the Kashmir valley and the Jammu division.
The officials said in the first phase, healthcare workers across the union territory will be given shots while frontline workers will be covered in the second phase.
Jammu and Kashmir has recorded over 1,22,700 cases of coronavirus so far while the death toll due to the epidemic has reached 1,912. The number of active cases is around 2,000.(PTI)
Jammu-Srinagar remained closed for third day on Wednesday after retaining wall of a key bridge collapsed at Ramban even as BRO has started construction of a Bailey bridge to restore the traffic on the thoroughfare, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world.
Officials told GNS that the highway shall remain closed for “next few days” due to sudden collapse of the retaining wall of the bridge near Kela Morh, Ramban.
“Repairing work is going on. However, Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar, Jammu-Ramban, Gool Sangaldan, Magerkot- Banihal, and Banihal-Qazigund stretches are through for local traffic,” they said, adding, “People are requested to take their journey accordingly.”
The 260-kilomter thoroughfare has been closed since 6:20 p.m. on January 10 after the retaining wall of key bridge collapsed. There is no optional carriageway available nearby.
“In the interim, to restore connectivity, the construction of a Bailey bridge has been started by BRO,” they said. A Bailey bridge is a portable, pre-fabricated and truss viaduct usually built for military purposed.
Sources told GNS that hundreds of vehicles are stranded around the damaged spot.
Mughal road, connecting Shopian and Poonch districts, also remained closed. Srinagar-Leh highway has been officially closed on the orders by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir on December 30. (GNS)
On 11/01/2021 at 2150 hours Police Station Khanyar received an information from reliable sources that near Dastageer Sahib Khanyar, some unknown persons have stabbed a person who has been shifted to SMHS hospital & declared dead on arrival at hospital.
On receipt of this information case FIR No. 03/2021 U/S 302 , 120-B was registered at Police Station Khanyar & investigation was set into motion.
The deceased was later identified as Zayan Chasti S/o Syed M Ashraf chasti R/o Rainawari Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum(JKCSF) has taken a dig on the administration for not having given facilities to the stranded passengers on Srinagar Jammu Highway and dealt effectively the scarcity crisis of essencial commodities in Kashmir amid the heavy snowfall after which the road was closed and continues to be closed. In a statement issued here Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani lambasted the authorities upon their approach of meeting the so called crisis of snow which he said is a matter of routine season in Kashmir than calling it any calamity. Wani said every year winter comes with a snowfall and govt ought to be prepared for the challenges in advance by virtue of road clearance, flights and the stocks of essential commodities as to meet the crissis. The Srinagar Jammu Highway is bound to get blocked as and when inclement wheather disturbs the road particularly in harsh winter. “Afterall why a plan is not worked out in advance to overcome the problems that is streamlining the air flight fare and stocking of sufficient essential commodities. Why Air fares touch sky whenever the road gets closed especially nowadays when experts predict closure for more days” Wani asked JKCSF demanded the immediate redressal of public grievances especially airlifting of stranded passengers of Srinagar Jammu Highway and other hilly areas and ensure the availability of essential commodities and the price control thereof.
08 booths have been prepared for vaccination in Skims’ says MS SKIMS

The authorities of Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura are all prepared to give the first doses of vaccines to a priority group selected by the Central Government from January 16, i.e., on Saturday.
According to the Medical Superintendent of Skims Soura, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Jan, the preparations regarding the vaccinations are all set and are waiting for the 16th January to give first jabs of the vaccine as per the guidelines of the Central government.
“The vaccination will be administered to the healthcare workers on a voluntary basis. We have prepared eight booths in our institution for the vaccinations and have put up the proper observation and waiting areas. These things are all complete along with the manpower needed during the vaccination,” Jan said.He further added that the number of centres had been chosen for the vaccination throughout the Kashmir valley.
However, the vaccines Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Covishield by Oxford-AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of India have been approved by the government of India to protect against the spread of coronavirus. (CNS)
High-level investigation initiated, involved will be brought to justice soon: Sinha

Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha Wednesday visited the family of slain goldsmith, Satpal Nischal, who was killed at his shop at Saraibala, Srinagar a few days ago, and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family members.
Strongly condemning the killing, the Lt Governor said that a high-level investigation has already been initiated and assured the family members that culprits involved in this heinous act of violence will be brought to justice very soon.
The Lieutenant Governor paid condolences to the family members of the deceased and said that such despicable and cowardly acts will not go unpunished.
The Lieutenant Governor was briefed by the family members that their family has been residing in Kashmir for the last 50 years and during this long period, they are living with local people with very cordial relations.

A day long training cum awareness programme on Forest Rights Act 2006 was today organized at Govt Degree College for Boys Baramulla by Forest Department in collaboration with district administration Baramulla under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner, Dr G N Itoo.
Various stakeholders and others concerned participated in the awareness programme.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner complimented the participants and highlighted the aim and objectives of the act. He said that effective implementation of FRA 2006 will empower the forest dwellers and will give them their rights. Moreover, he emphasized upon the concerned authorities to work in coordination so that any kind of impediment is sorted out in a hassle free manner.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Mohammad Ahsan Mir also spoke at the event and highlights various salient features and the means to implement the act smoothly.
Later,DFO JV Division Parvaiz Ahmad gave a detailed account of Forest Rights Act, 2006 and highlighted various aspects associated with it, through the power point presentation. The participants were briefed in detail about the salient features of the Act and the rules including the preamble, the forest dwelling communities, the constitution and functions of the 3 tier system of committees at the district, sub divisional and gram Panchayat level and the procedure to be followed for inviting, acknowledging and processing the claims under the Act.
At the conclusion, question and answer session was also organised during which the participants asked their queries and get their answers from the concerned experts.
Suspected militants on Wednesday lobbed a grenade towards CRPF party in Rainawari area of Srinagar. However, officials said that no loss of life or injury was reported.
According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), officials said that militants lobbed a grenade towards CRPF party from 21 battalion outside Chatti Padhsahi Gurudwara here in Rainawari.
“However, no loss of life or injury was reported during the incident,” officials said, adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers—(KNO)
