Baramulla Covid-19 center in indoor stadium much ado about nothing

Unhygienic conditions, lack of proper cleanness, no separate toilets and hand washing facilities with poor management put lives of patients and attendants in risk

There is dearth of staff and we are managing things properly but some miscreants are blowing things out of proportion: Principal GMC Dr. Ruby

Baramulla: Amid rise in Covid-19 positive cases in district Baramulla, patients admitted in COVID-19 ‘Wellness’ centre established at Indoor Sports Stadium Baramulla and their attendants allege that they are being treated like animals as unhygienic conditions, lack of proper cleanness, no separate toilets and hand washing facilities with poor management of patient care by the doctors and paramedics has put their lives into jeopardy.

“I am attending my mother here, since DC Baramulla visited the Covid-19 center no one bother to do any cleanness or sanitation of this Covid- care hospital. The risk of contracting the virus while attending a Covid patient is extremely high for al as attendants are not provided any guidelines and protective gear,” said Sheikh Shahzad.

“Attendants change like anything and relatives of patients without any proper protective gear are being allowed to enter the ward at will. There are no guidelines for the attendants, no one to brief them about the sensitivity of the issue, no one to guide them through and no one to regulate the flow of people in a ward full of COVID patients. Is this the universal COVID protocol?” asked Shahzad

Last year the arrangements were better and things were handed much better way but COVID-19 mitigation measures undertaken by the authorities this time are comparatively very poor. The pathetic condition of Covid-19 center was brought into notice of DDC Chairperson Safeena Beigh who herself made surprise visit to the center to check ground reality.

“See our condition, are we animals?  Today we are infected tomorrow would be your turn. Don’t treat us like cattle as there has been no cleanness since DC Baramulla visited the Covid-19 center,” yelled an elderly woman Covid patient in the center.

Situation turned ugly when a doctor who has been appointed as Nodal Officer Covid-19 center Indoor Stadium Baramull allegedly snatched phone of a senior video journalist Sheikh Dawood who works for DDK and Aaj Tak when he was recording the grievances and ordeal of the attendants and patients.

“My phone was snatched by Dr. Yasir who is Nodal Officer of the Covid hospital in Baramulla when I was discharging my professional duty. People in the Covid hospital face grave problems and issues as there is mismanagement,” senior video journalist Sheikh Dawood said.

He added that matter was brought into the notice of Principal GMC Baramulla Principal GMC Baramulla Dr Ruby Reshi but she didn’t pay any heed.

When contacted Principal GMC Baramulla Dr Ruby Reshi, there is dearth of staff and we are managing things properly but some miscreants are blowing things out of proportion.

82 KILLED IN BAGHDAD HOSPITAL FIRE, IRAQ INTERIOR MINISTRY SAYS

SNS KASHMIR

BAGHDAD, Iraq —

Iraq’s Interior Ministry said Sunday that 82 people died and 110 were injured in a catastrophic fire that broke out in the intensive care unit of a Baghdad hospital tending to severe coronavirus patients.

Negligence on the part of hospital authorities has been blamed for the Saturday night fire, which initial reports suggest was caused when an oxygen cylinder exploded in the ward of Ibn al-Khatib hospital. Iraq’s prime minister fired key hospital officials hours after the catastrophic incident.

Among the dead were at least 28 patients on ventilators battling severe symptoms of the virus, tweeted Ali al-Bayati, a spokesman of the country’s independent Human Rights Commission. The commission is a semi-official body.

Firefighters rushed to battle the flames that raged across the second floor of the hospital. Civil defense teams put out flames until the early hours of the morning.

Ambulances transported dozens of wounded. The Health Ministry said at least 200 people were rescued from the scene.

Doctors at the scene were frazzled by the chaos unfolding around them. They said numerous burned bodies were carried out by paramedics from the hospital floor.

By midday Sunday, relatives were still searching anxiously for unaccounted for loved ones.

Please, two of my relatives are missing. … I am going to die (without news about them),” posted a young woman on social media after a fruitless search for her family members. “I hope someone can help us find Sadi Abdul Kareem and Samir Abdul Kareem, they were in the ICU.”

The fire came as Iraq grapples with a severe second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Daily virus cases now average around 8,000, the highest since Iraq began recording infection rates early last year. At least 15,200 people have died of coronavirus in Iraq among a total of at least 100,000 confirmed cases.

In response to the fire, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi fired the director-general of the Baghdad Health Department in the al-Rusafa area, where the hospital is located. He also fired the director of Ibh al-Khatib Hospital and its director of engineering and maintenance, according to a statement from the Health Ministry and his office.

After the fire first broke out, Al-Khadhimi held an emergency meeting at the headquarters of the Baghdad Operations Command, which coordinates Iraqi security forces, according to a statement on his Twitter account.

In the meeting he said the incident amounted to negligence.

“Negligence in such matters is not a mistake, but a crime for which all negligent parties must bear responsibility,” he said. He gave Iraqi authorities 24 hours to present the results of an investigation.

U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeannine Hennis-Plasschaert expressed “shock and pain” over the incident in a statement and called for stronger protection measures in hospitals.AP

JAMMU, APRIL 25:

A man was arrested for allegedly killing his 20-year-old wife who was found hanging inside a shed in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir about two weeks ago, police said on Sunday.

Mangal Singh, a resident of Mallikot village, was arrested after the interim medical report of his wife Sita Devi revealed that her death was not a suicide but a murder, a police official said.

Devi was found hanging inside a goat shed at her house on April 14 and her in-laws tried to pass it as a case of suicide, the official said, adding that preliminary investigation pointed towards some domestic dispute as a motive behind the murder.

He said police were suspicious from the day one and questioned several persons before the interim medical report helped them in concluding that the woman had not committed suicide but her body was hanged to cover up the crime.

The official said inquest proceedings were converted into a murder case and further investigation was underway.—(PTI)
