Baramulla: Amid snowfall, a woman suffering from labour pain had to be carried on cot shouldered by neighbourers about 3 kilometers from a remote village Hamam of Doniwari Rafiabad to reach Dangiwacha hospital in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday as the road link remained closed due to accumulation of just seven inch snow.
According the locals, the pregnant woman, Fateeda Begum wife of Abdul Majid of Hamam Doniwari developed labour pain Sunday on early morning, her family members called local Asha who informed BMO Dangiwacha for ambulance services, the ambulance could reach up to the village as the road remained closed with accumulation of seven inch snow.
People alleged that the seven inch snow which accumulated on roads was not cleared by the administration due to no vehicle could ply on the road and the patient had to be taken to hospital on cot. They accused hospital administration of showing callousness in clearing the snow from the roads.
“As her pain increased we decided to carry her in a makeshift cradle palanquin on shoulders trudging 3 kilometers amid snowfall and biting cold. Thank God we reached Ravoocha Rafiabad where a private vehicle was available and we reached Dangiwacha hospital where she delivered the baby at hospital,” said Abdul Majid, husband of the lady.
When contacted Block Medical Officer Dangiwacha Dr Irfan, he said , “We send the ambulance to bring the patients but it was slippery due to snow and the ambulance could not reach to the spot latter the patient got the private vehicles Jeep at Ravoocha to reach the hospital and both mother and child are safe.”
These incidents illustrate how authorities have failed to provide basic facilities to people in remote villages and people who face medical emergencies have no other option than carrying the patient on their shoulders or in palanquins cradles.
Meanwhile, late in the evening, DC Baramulla Dr. G.N Itoo wrote on his fb wall, ‘Acting on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, health department has launched Emergency Health Services Mobilisation Programme wherein a few critical patients more especially pregnant women of remote areas have been shifted to designated health centres well in advance while others shall be shifted tommorow morning. All the BMOs have been directed to arrange Ambulances for the purpose whereas people can call on 108 in case of any emergency. The move was taken In view of weather advisory issued by MeT department so as to avert any kind of exigency that may arise due to disruption in road connectivity due to snowfall.’
