Route to peace in subcontinent traverses through Jammu & Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti

SNS KASHMIR

KULGAM, MARCH 20TH:

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and Former Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti today reminded the leadership in New Delhi and Islamabad that the route to peace in subcontinent traverses through Kashmir and any bonhomie between the two neighbors should put Kashmir and Kashmiris front and centre.

Addressing a mammoth gathering of party workers at District Convention Kulgam Mehbooba Mufti said that any renewed thaw in the relationships of the two countries is subservient to the progress made towards addressing the long pending political and democratic demands of people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Recent statement of Pakistan army chief calling for burying the hatchet and moving the Indo-Pak relationship forward is a positive development. But we must be reminded that aiming for low hanging fruit like movement of goods and people through Wagah border or giving India a passage to Central Asia via Pakistan and Afghanistan while putting Kashmir issue at the back burner is akin to missing wood for the trees,” Mehbooba said.

“If they are really sincere and mean business they must know that the process of reconciliation has to begin with Kashmir. While statements back and forth indicate a movement forward but people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to be shrouded in the veil of darkness without any reprieve in sight,” she added.

Addressing the convention senior party leader Dr Mehboob Beg lauded the steadfastness and resolve of party president Mehbooba Mufti for her constant advocacy of resolution of Kashmir issue despite the full frontal assault on the party and its leadership.

“Our leaders are languishing in jails, party president is constantly in the eye of the storm but PDP as an institution refuses to buckle under pressure and continues to be the people`s movement as envisaged by party founder Mufti Mohammed Sayeed,” Beg said.

Highlighting the decay in governance and public delivery mechanism senior leader and former Minister Sofi Ab Gaffar chided the administration for its deep slumber and incompetence in mitigating the miseries of the people.

“Post August 5th 2019 governance has taken a nosedive and in the absence of political oversight babus are crushing the common man. Corruption is at its peak, inflation is soaring, spurious pesticides are ruining our horticulture and no one seems to care,” Sofi lamented.

Those who attended and addressed the convention include Party Chief Spokesperson Syed Suhail Bukhari, State Secretary Gulzar Khattana, District President Kulgam Sheikh Gh Mohiuddin, DDC members Gulzar Ahmed Dar and Gulzar Ah Sheikh, senior leaders Mohd Amin Dar, Zaffrullah Wani, Mohd Amin, Sajjad Ahmed and Manzoor Zargar.

SRINAGAR, MARCH 20 :

The steady surge in Coronavirus cases in J&K, even as the vaccination drive is underway, has raised legitimate concerns about the prevailing second wave of the virus in the region.

Doctors believe that the rise of 50 cases per day to now over 150 per day indicates that J&K is in second wave.

Known doctor and former director SKIMS Dr Mohammad Sultan Khuroo while talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that the second wave of Covid-19 is already here, “but a matter of concern will be how this second wave will behave”.

He said that cases have started rising in Srinagar, Baramulla, Budgam and Jammu districts, while the rest of the districts haven’t seen any surge yet.

“J&K is reporting three times more cases than it was reporting a few days before,” he said.

Khuroo said that people must support vaccination and take both doses on time.

“We must adhere to Covid-19 SOPs like wearing mask particularly when going outside, maintain social distance, sanitize hands, avoid close door gathering,” he said.

“Vaccine is very safe with mild side effects and it will take few more months to break the pandemic,” he said while adding that people must leave hesitancy and whosoever is being offered vaccine must take it at the earliest.

Khuroo said that it is not necessary that vaccine can give sterilizing immunity and even after getting vaccination, one can get a virus in your throat.

Khuroo said that rapid tests are not much effective and there is a need to switch to another alternative form of testing so that people can get cent per cent right report.

“School going children, their teachers and other staff must follow SOPs in letter and spirit,” he said.

Experts believe that there is a need to learn to live with the virus and the pandemic may end but Covid-19 can re-emerge as a seasonal virus like other viruses.

They said that strain is already in the community and it can reemerge any time as only a few per cent population have been vaccinated so far.

Dr Naveed Nazir Shah said that people must learn how to live with the virus and come for vaccination at the earliest.

“As of now, the situation isn’t critical. At present, around 80 per cent Covid positive patients are at their homes and just a few per cent of people need oxygen or need to keep in ICU,” Shah said. “People will take vaccines without any hesitancy and follow precautions in letter and spirit, only then we can beat this pandemic easily.”—(KNO)

He said that a lot of speculation has risen after news of the prime minister testing positive broke, especially with regard to vaccinations, and he wishes to provide some clarity.

“First of all, it is important to understand when the vaccines begin to show their effect and what changes are seen.

“No vaccine brings about any immediate changes, which means its efficacy, and our anti-bodies, do not kick in after the first dose,” he explained.

Dr Sultan said a level of antibodies that are fit to fight the infection are only produced two weeks after the second shot, in the case of two-dose vaccines. Geo news
