An army officer of lieutenant rank committed suicide by shooting himself dead at an army depot in Khonmoh area in outskirts of Srinagar, official sources said on Wednesday.
They said that the officer identified as Sudeep Baghat Singh ended life by shooting himself with his service rifle.
On hearing the gunshots, some soldiers rushed to the spot and found him in pool of blood, they said. Later, he was shifted to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, they added. The cause of him taking such an extreme step was not known immediately.
A police official told GNS that necessary proceedings into the incident have been launched. (GNS)
A Govt School teacher died of a sudden cardiac arrest on Tuesday evening in Trehgam area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara
Reports said that a teacher identified as Zahoor Ahmad Dar son of late Mohammad Ashraf Dar resident of Bunpora Trehgam, suffered a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday evening at his home in Trehgam.
He was immediately rushed to SDH Kupwara where doctors on duty declared him dead on arrival.
In the interest of general public, Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) Baramulla in collaboration with Saaya, a non-governmental organization (NGO) on Tuesday conducted trail test drives for learning license and driving license at Lagama area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The trail is first of its kind being held in far-off and mountainous areas like Uri. At least 55 persons participated in the trial.
The locals have hailed the efforts of the ARTO Baramulla Mubashir Jan. ARTO also briefed the locals about the traffic awareness.
“Uri is the best location I have come across while conducting the trails as it is nestled in mountains and has hilly terrains,” Jan said.
Naveed Bukhtiyar, General Secretary Saaya thanked ARTO for taking up such an initiative. “I request him to organize more such trails which will truly bring relief to people of the town. It is the service at the doorstep,” he said.
“However, the rotten staff or agents will never allow him to work in this public friendly manner,” he added.
Bukhtiyar has also requested Hon’ble LG to empower such officers with special powers so that he can choose his staff for such public causes and award him for his honesty and dedication to the public.
Abrar Bhat, local social activist said, “We request ARTO to open an office in Uri permanently for such services or they should visit Uri once in a week.”
Today (02.03.2021), NIA registered a case RC-01/2021/NIA/JMU relating to conspiracy by frontal running militant organization Lashkar-e-Mustafa working at the behest of proscribed militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammed to carry out militant activities in Jammu area with the aimof threatening the sovereignty, integrity and security of India.
The case was initially registered as FIR number 16/2021 of Gangyal Police station, District Jammu on 06.02.2021 under section 18, 20 of Unlawful activities prevention act. NIA has re-registered this case as RC-01/2021/NIA/JMU on 02.03.2021 and has taken over the investigation.
The arrested accused Hidayat-ullah Malik is the chief of Lashker-e-Mustafa.
During searches conducted, one hand grenade, 03 magazines and 28 rounds with other incriminating material were recovered from his possession.
Hidayat-ullah Malik had done reconnaissance of many security installations in Jammu and Delhi in 2018 and 2019 for carrying out militant attacks. He has been associated with other militant groups in past and has furthered subversive and terror activities in Kashmir valley. The militant group had also committed a daylight Bank robbery in which to Sixty (60) Lakh Rupees were looted from JK Bank, Main Branch Shopian in November 2020.
Seeks Action Against Officials For Violating Her Right To Travel Abroad

Former Chief Minister and PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti, has approached J&K High Court for issuance of passport allegedly denied to her for want for police verification.
In her plea before the court, Mehbooba Mufti said that the passport issued to her was valid till 31st May 2019.
She applied for issuance of a passport before regional Passport Officer on 11 December last year. “The Passport as per the instruction manual is expected to be dispatched within approximately 30 days,” she says.
“After the receipt of the Application, complete in all respects, the (RPO) sought police verification from that of (Addl. Director General of Police, CID) and (Sr. Superintendent of Police, District Srinagar).”
After an efflux of more than a month, she said that on noticing that the Passport has not been dispatchedand the same ispending forphysical police verification, Mehbooba said that she submitted a representation Passport Officer, stating that despite efflux of more than a month, the report sought by him hasnotbeensubmitted, notwithstanding the guidelines issued by the Union of India through Secretary to Government, Ministry of External Affairs which mandate that the police verification is required to be completed within a period of 21 days .
“Accordingly, it was requested that the police verification report be forwarded to that of (RPO) at an earliest so that there is no delay in issuance of the Passport,” she said, adding, “That despite representation, it appears from the record that the (Addl. Director General of Police, CID) for reasons unknown, till date has not forwarded the police verification report.” Subsequently, she has sought directions to the concerned to issue Passport in her favour expeditiously.
She has also sought directions declaring the action of officials concerned in not allowing her to travel abroad as illegal and unconstitutional violating her fundamental right to travel abroad as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution or India.
“Any such order or direction which this Hon’ble court may consider appropriate in the given facts and circumstances of the case,” she added.(GNS)
Bupinder Kumar Emphasized on Strengthening Monitoring Mechanism, Providing Effective Public Service Delivery

After assuming the office of Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Bupinder Kumar today chaired an interactive cum introductory meeting with the officers of district administration at dak bungalow Baramulla where several aspects pertaining to overall socio-economic development were comprehensively discussed.
The concerned officers, after welcoming Bupinder Kumar for assuming the office as Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, introduced themselves one on one. They also presented the status of various developmental works undertaken in various sectors viz health, education, rural development, PDD etc by the concerned agencies.
While taking a sector wise review of various major developmental works, the DC emphasized for adopting a coordinated approach for achieving the desired results. He stressed to ramp up the pace of work so that all the undertaken projects are completed well within the stipulated time period. Moreover, he urged upon the concerned officers to identify the bottlenecks, if any and bring them into his notice so that they are sorted out as early as possible.
While taking a detailed review of COVID-19 mitigation measures, DC deliberated upon the concerned agencies to play a proactive role and formulate a viable and outcome based mechanism in this regard.
The DC further directed Chief Education Officer Baramulla to scale up the requisite activities and mobilize all the available resources in view of new educational session. He added that imparting qualitative education and achieving better results shall remain one of his core concerns.
Bupinder Kumar also observed that providing hassle free and smooth public services by strengthening accountability and transparency in official functioning is the top most priority of his administration. He added that effective public service delivery and robust grievance redressel mechanism is the cornerstone of a welfare administration.
Meanwhile, DC sought cooperation from the concerned officers for developing the district from different perspectives pertaining to developmental concerns. He added that his focus shall remain on providing efficient and prompt public services besides establishing a vigor and effective grievance redressel mechanism. DC also emphasized for working with zeal and dedication while discharging official duties.

The Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) on Tuesday claimed to have arrested three non-locals for their alleged involvement in lottery scam.
In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the CBK said that it arrested three persons from Kishangarh Delhi in connection with a case under FIR number 37/2019 under section 420 RPC and 66-D IT Act.
The Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Patiala House New Delhi granted transit remand for shifting of the arrested people, the statement said and identified the trio as Santosh Kumar Bhagat, son of Sukhdev Bhagat of House number 49 A/9 Gaushala Kishangarh Vasant Kunj Delhi, Lakhan Lal Ahirvar, son of Ram Swaroop of House number 80/9 Kishangarh Vasant Kunj, Delhi and Benadict Silvester @ Manav Tyagi, son of Lawarance Desousa of Flat No. D-2, B-48 Chatterpur Extension New Delhi.
“The three persons were arrested after strenuous efforts by the Investigation Team in Lottery Scam case,” it said.
“Pertinently, consequent upon the reception of a written complaint received by Crime Branch Kashmir, which inter alia revealed that the complainant received a phone call from an unknown number, informing him about a prize of seven Lakh rupees that he had won in a contest; in order to claim the prize money he was asked to deposit some money,” the statement said.
“The complainant deposited an amount of 138,000/= in the Bank account maintained in the name of Non Stop Deal, operated by one Santosh Kumar Bhagat. Further investigation is going on,” it added—(KNO)

Seven members of a family fell unconscious in south Kashmir’s Shopian district after mistakenly consuming a medicinal plant in tea.
Sources told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a child of the family in Nabal Zawoora area of Shopian had grinded a medicinal plant probably Argemone mexicana and mixed it with tea.
They said that after taking this tea, all seven members fell unconscious and were shifted to district hospital Shopian, where from they were shifted to SMHS Srinagar for advanced treatment.
Sources, however, said that their condition was stable.
They identified them as Azad Ahmad, Hajira Begum, Mohammad Amin, Fareeda Jan, Shabir Ahmed besides two minor kids—(KNO)
Today (01.03.2021), NIA arrested four drug traffickers namely i) Altaf Ahmed Shah s/o Mohd Afzal Shah r/o Dangherpora , P/S- Kheer Bhawani, Ganderbal, Kashmir ; ii) Showkat Ahmad Parray s/o Abdul Salam Parray r/o Parray Mohalla, Wangipora Sumbal, District Bandipora, J&K; Mudasir Ahmad Dar s/o Ghulam Mohammad Dar r/o Wanduna, Shopian, J & K and iv) Amin Allaie @ Hilal Mir s/o Hazi Ghulam Mohi-u-din Allie Near Petrol Pump, Shan-e-Kashmir National Highway Sangam, Tehsil & PS Bijbehera, District Anantnag, J&K, from Srinagar in connection with the case pertaining to seizure of 21 kg of Heroin and cash amount of Rs.1,35,89,850/- from the members of a drugs syndicate operating in J&K.
The case was initially registered as FIR No. 183/2020 dated 11.06.2020 at PS Handwara, District Kupwara J&K wherein during checking of vehicles at Kairo Bridge, Handwara, accused Abdul Momin Peer’s Hyundai Creta vehicle was intercepted by police at a naka and during search Rs. 20 Lakhs along with two Kgs Heroin was recovered and seized. NIA had re-registered the case as RC-03/2020/NIA/JMU on 23.06.2020 and taken up the investigation. Chargesheet was filed in the instant case on 05.12.2020 against six accused persons in the NIA special court, Jammu.
Investigation so far has revealed that the accused persons were involved in cross-border smuggling of heroin in huge quantities from Pakistan and were supplying the same in J&K and other parts of the country. They were also in regular communication with the operatives of proscribed terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), using encrypted chat platforms. The proceeds of sale were being used to finance the activities of terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba operating in the Kashmir Valley.
The arrested accused were produced before the CJM Court in Srinagar today and have been taken on transit remand for 03 days.
