The anti-terror probe agency NIA has taken a stern view of an incident of alleged torture at its Jammu branch where a suspect was brutally beaten up by a DySP-rank officer. A high-level probe has been ordered to look into the charges. A youth was mercilessly thrashed during questioning. It is suspected that the man could have a role in RS Pura narco terrorism case. According to DySP Chekpal Sherawat had tried to coerce a response out of the suspect as he believed may have hidden the consignment. The suspect was let off after several hours of detention and questioning at the NIA office. Sources said the officer has been suspended and a high-level inquiry has been ordered. An NIA team headed by a senior officer in Poonch has been rushed to Jammu to look into the case. DySP Chekpal Sherawat is originally from the Delhi Police force, who was inducted in NIA a decade ago. The senior officer said, “There have been several complaints against him. He now faces disciplinary action, including dismissal.”

“With deepest sorrow I inform you all about sad demise of my beloved mother Asha Beigum on Sunday at 3.AM. at her residence Behrampora Rafiabad. Nimaz-Jinaza will be offered at 9:30 am,” tweeted Zargar Gulzar.

March 27: SSP Budgam Shri Tahir Saleem Khan-JKPS and SSP Awantipora Shri Mohd Yousuf-JKPS hold introductory meetings with media fraternity. SSP Awantipora also facilitated an interaction meet with DDCs & BDCs members of PD Awantipora.
SSP Budgam highlighted the importance and role of media in a democratic setup by describing media as an important pillar of democracy. While appreciating their role, he called for a mutual coordination with regard to reformation of society by eradicating social evils from the society. He further emphasised that with the advancement of social media, the number of options of communication has increased which has in turn increased the challenges for media fraternity while disseminating the information.
During meeting, various issues having bearing on the society were discussed. All participants were assured of full cooperation from Police Budgam.
Similarly in Awantipora, the meeting with media fraternity was held in the office chamber of SSP Awantipora in which SDPO Awantipora and media person associated with different print and electronic media participated.
In the meeting, a threadbare discussion was held on several issues and all the participants called for further strengthening the relations between Police and media. While assuring the media fraternity that all the issues discussed in the meeting will be solved at an earliest, SSP Awantipora also sought feedback from the media persons on the issues pertaining to police working in the district so as to improve police efficiency for better public delivery system. He also enjoined upon media persons to imbibe professional value and be committed to welfare of public cause.
Media fraternity members also put forth a series of suggestions of public importance and chairing officer assured to take all these on priority. They also extended their wholehearted cooperation with District Police Awantipora.
Later on, SSP Awantipora facilitated an interaction meet with DDCs & BDCs members of PD Awantipora at DPL Awantipora.
The main focus of the interaction was about the security related protocols regarding the visit in their respective DDC constituencies. While interacting with the members, SSP Awantipora said that Awantipora Police is committed to provide safety and security of all the members so that they will be able to discharge their duties without any fear on ground.
While appreciating the efforts of Awantipora Police, DDC and BDC members stated that the role of Police is imperative as Awantipora Police has always been extending its support to all the members.
On the conclusion, SSP Awantipora assured all the DDCs and BDCs Members that all the future safety and security related issues will be dealt seriously and assured the improvement in overall security scenario on the basis of future feedbacks from the members.

As a part of public outreach programme, SSP Anantnag Shri Imtiyaz Hussain chaired a police public interaction meeting held at Dak Bunglow Anantnag.
The meeting was attended by respectable citizens of the area including Chairman Municipal Council Anantnag Shri Hilal Ahmad Shah, members of traders associations, transport associations and media persons. During the meeting various issues of public importance including illegal encroachments in the market on footpaths, parking discipline, traffic jams were discussed. The participants also put forth their concerns regarding drug abuse among the youth.
The chairing officer assured the participants that district police is working hard to counter drug abuse and will continue its drive against drugs. SSP Anantnag also underlined the need for inculcating the sense of belongingness towards our nation and do our duties as responsible citizens of the country which include promoting peace and cooperating with police and administration for crime free society.
Two unidentified militants and a soldier were killed while two other soldiers were injured in a gunfight at Wangam area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.
Official sources told GNS that based on specific information about the presence of the militants, a joint team of police and army launched a cordon- and-search-operation in the area.
As the joint team approached the suspected spot, they said, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering off a gunfight.
Two militants were killed so far while three army soldiers received injured in the initial phase of the gunfight. The injured were shifted to hospital to army’s 92-base hospital where one among them succumbed. The identity of the slain militants was yet to be ascertained, they said. “One M4 Rifle was also recovered from the slain militant,” they said. Meanwhile reports said that internet services have been suspended in the south Kashmir district. (GNS)
Budgam Police organised a Cross Country event “Run For Unity” which was flagged off by SSP Budgam Shri Tahir Saleem Khan-JKPS. The event started at 08:30 am from Railway Station Budgam and culminated at Sports Stadium Budgam covering a distance of about 4 kilometres.
More than 250 persons/students of different age groups participated in the event with keen enthusiasm. During the pre flag off ceremony held at Railway Station Budgam, SSP Budgam interacted with the participants and expressed that the event “Run for Unity” has been organised for the unity and integrity of the Nation besides nurturing the sportsman spirit among the youth.
During closing ceremony held at Sports Stadium Budgam, Chief Guest Shri Shahbaz Mirza-KAS, Deputy Commissioner Budgam and SSP Budgam distributed cash rewards, mementos and certificates among the first 13 winners of the event. Among the winners, Zahid Farooq secured first position, Abid Hussain second position and the third position was jointly secured by Maqsood Hussain and Fida Hussain.
A cash reward of Rs 5000/= 3000/= and 2000/= was awarded to the Ist three position holders respectively while as Rs 1000/- each was awarded to subsequent 04 position holders.
At the closing ceremony, SSP Budgam expressed his gratitude towards the participants for joining the event and making it successful. He also emphasized on youth to take full advantage of the platform provided by Budgam Police which is aimed to boost the sports activities and channalise energy towards positive goals. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Assad today chaired a meeting of District Level Screening cum Coordination Committee (DLSCC) to discuss cases of militancy related incidents here.
During the meeting, 12 cases of victims of militancy related incidents came up for discussion and an amount of Rs. 14, 11, 500 was sanctioned in favour of the death cases/ injured cases and SRO-43 cases of the district Srinagar—(KNO)
There are nine Public Sector Undertakings which are non-operational for the last five to 29 years, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has said.
The CAG, in its report on social, general and economic (non-PSUs) in the erstwhile state for the year ending 31 March, 2019 said among the nine PSUs, four are in Power Sector alone and have investment of Rs 56.60 crore towards share capital (Rs 55.77 crore) and long term loans (Rs 0.83 crore), by the State Government.
The nine PSUs include Jammu and Kashmir Power Transmission Company Limited, Jammu Power Distribution Company Limited, Kashmir Power Distribution Company Limited, Jammu and Kashmir Power Trading Company Limited, Jammu and Kashmir State Handloom Handicrafts Raw Material Supplies Organisation Limited (A Subsidiary of Himalayan Wool Combers Limited), Tawi Scooters Limited, Himalayan Wool Combers Limited, Jammu and Kashmir Road Development Corporation Limited and Jammu and Kashmir International Trade Centre Corporation Limited
In all there are 42 PSUs, 33 of them are working. The PSUs were established to carry out activities of commercial nature keeping in view the welfare of people and occupy an important place in the economy of the J&K, the CAG said.
The PSUs consist of State Government Companies and Statutory Corporations. As on 31 March 2019, there were 421 PSUs (six in Power Sector and 36 in Sectors other than Power Sector), including three Statutory Corporations under the audit jurisdiction of the CAG.
The 33 working PSUs, the CAG said, registered an annual turnover of Rs 9,784.90 crore and earned an aggregate profit of Rs 448.02 crore as of 30 September 2019 as per their latest finalized accounts. “This turnover was equal to 6.33 per cent of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), which was rs 1,54,441 crore (at current prices) for the State for 2018-19.”
One PSU, Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited, having a total paid-up equity of Rs 55.70 crore is listed on the stock exchange since July 1998. “This paid-up equity of Rs 55.70 crore of the Bank is held partly by the State Government (59.23 per cent ) and the remaining part by Foreign Institutional Investors, Resident Individuals and others (40.77 per cent).
“During the year 2018-19, six PSUs were incorporated and no PSU was closed down. There are two power generation Companies, Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDC) and Chenab Valley Power Project Private Limited (CVPPP),” the CAG said the report, as per GNS.
“The Chenab Valley Power Project Private Limited (CVPPP) which is a joint venture Company, has an investment of Rs 1,439.18 crore as of March 2019 (JKSPDC: Rs 687.55 crore, NHPC: Rs 747.55 crore and PTC: Rs 4.08 crore.”
As a consequence of the unbundling of the Power Sector, one power transmission Company— Jammu and Kashmir Power Transmission Company Limited, two power distribution companies— Jammu Power Distribution Company Limited and Kashmir Power Distribution Company Limited (June 2013) and one Company— Jammu and Kashmir Power Trading Company Limited— exclusively to conduct trading activities in power were incorporated on behalf of the State Government. “However, these Companies which have been incorporated between March 2013 and June 2013, are yet to start their commercial operations as of March 2019,” the CAG noted. “In the absence of commercial operations by these companies, the power transmission and distribution activities continue to be carried out by the Power Development Department of Jammu & Kashmir Government.” (GNS)
