Three more persons succumbed to the covid-19 during the last 24, taking the fatality count due to the pestilence in Jammu and Kashmir to 1900, officials told GNS on Wednesday.
They said that all the victims belonged to Kashmir Valley—a 60-year-old man from Urpash Ganderbal, a 75-year-old man from Sangam Anantnag and a 50-year-old man from Magam Handwara in Kupwara.
With these death, the total fatality count reached 1194 in the Valley while 706 have succumbed to the virus in Jammu region.
Srinagar district with 450 deaths tops the list followed by Jammu (361), Baramulla (172), Budgam (110), Kupwara (93), Pulwama (88), Anantnag (84), Doda (64), Bandipora (60), Udhampur (57), Kulgam (53), Rajouri (54), Kathua (49), Ganderbal (45), Shopian (39), Samba (39), Poonch (24), Ramban (21), Kishtwar(22), and Reasi (15). A 60-year-old female patient on Wednesday carried by the people on their shoulders amid non-availability of medical help in Ganderbal district.
Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said, authorities had failed to clear the snow following which locals in Ganderbal district had to carry patients on their own.
“Zewar Jaan, a 60-year-old woman, resident of Anderwan Dardpora suffered health emergency, while there was no medical help, the locals came to rescue and carried her on their shoulder”, said a local Kaisar Ahmad.
He added, “The patient carried by 10 people on their shoulder to Primary Health Care centre in Manigam PHC Ganderbal”.Meanwhile, locals have urged authorities to clear the road so that patients can reach out to hospitals.
Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has issued high, medium and low level avalanche warnings for higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
As per a communiqué released here that high danger level (Orange alert) avalanche warning has been issued for higher reaches of Poonch, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara And Bandipora districts.
A medium level (yellow alert) avalanche warning has been issued for upper reaches of Rajouri, Udhampur, Kulgam, Ganderbal And Kargil Districts.
Similarly, low level (yellow alert) avalanche warning has been issued for upper reaches of Reasi and Leh districts.
Srinagar: The Border Roads Organisation has cleared the runway at Srinagar International Airport after it was closed due to heavy snowfall.
Kashmir witnessed heavy snowfall since Monday which disrupted road traffic and forced cancellation of flights at Srinagar International Airport.
However, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) put men and machinery into work to clear the airport runway amid hectic efforts.
Officials said that after 72 hours of snowfall in Kashmir the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) pressed hi-tech equipment to clear the runway from the snow.
“It was made possible due to the continuous operation of the snow clearence machine on the runway to prevent the iceing on the highway,” said Col Mukesh of BRO.
Baramulla: After hectic efforts of locals and police, Bakhipora family finally could ferry body of their member home on Wednesday afternoon as Dangiwacha-Bakhipora road remained closed due to snowfall.
Locals said that a woman Haleema Begum of Bakhipora died in Srinagar hospital and her body was brought in Ambulance from Srinagar hospital but the Ambulance couldn’t enter Bakhipora as the Dangiwacha-Bakhipora road is closed due to snowfall.
Later, the body was shifted in a private vehicle which remained stranded for hours till police team heady by SDPO Rafiabad Nasir Ahmed joined by locals started snow clearance on the road.
” After hectic efforts by police and locals the body could finally reach Bakhipora,” said a local Mohmmed Ashraf.
People of the area has hailed efforts of SDPO Rafiabad Nasir Ahmed for his personal efforts and mobilisation of snow clearance operation on warfooting basis.
A food safety officer in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district was Wednesday placed under suspension by deputy commissioner for unauthorisedly remaining absent from his duty
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that in view of dereliction of duties and unauthorized absence from headquarter, Food Safety Officer, Pulwama Inderjit Singh has been placed under suspension by DC Pulwama.
“In view of inclement weather and to ensure prompt disaster mitigation measures the district administration had already issued orders under sec 34 of Disaster Management Act directing all officers to remain present in their respective jurisdictions,” the official said.
It is pertinent to mention that Divisional Administration Kashmir has also directed that Tehsildars, SHOs, TSOs, FSOs, officials of legal metrology shall regularly conduct market checking during this period so that any kind of hoarding and overcharging of essential commodities and items of daily needs is prevented.
Th official said that the said FSO was found absconding from the district and has been accordingly placed under suspension and attached with Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office Pulwama.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate has instructed all magistrates of the district to immediately seal any such office dealing with essential services which is found non-functional and staff found absconding during this period of extreme weather condition—(KNO)

However they said that the tower got defunct since last week and since then no one from BSNL is bothering to make it operational. “Thousands of people are directly getting affecting due to defenct BSNL Tower. The students are the worst hit but concerned authorities are not showing any interest . Sources told that more than 400’000 Rupees is outstanding of power Bills against BSNL Tower which they have failed to deposit , which compelled PDD to Cut the Power Supply.

Many Roads Blocked, Power Supplies Hit; MeT Forecasts Improvement From Afternoon

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 6 :
Snowfall continued in Kashmir Valley for fourth consecutive day on Wednesday. Flight operations to and fro Kashmir remained suspended while Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed due to mudslide and landslides at several other places en-route the thoroughfare besides snowfall in and around Jawahar Tunnel where close to four feet of snow has been recorded.
Officials told GNS that the work is underway to clear highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir with the outside world.
“Jammu-Srinagar highway remains blocked due to snow accumulation at Jawahar Tunnel and Landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at Samroli, Magarkot, Panthyal, Marog, Cafeteria mor, Dhalwas, Nashri,” the officials said. “The work is underway,” the official added. Around 4500 vehicles, mainly carrying supplies to Valley as well as passenger vehicles are stranded en route.
Regarding the air traffic, officials told GNS that at least eight flights have been already cancelled.
Due to snowfall, the official said that all flights were cancelled on 3rd, 4th and 5th January. “The concerned AAI executives have been working very hard in coordination with Beacon staff and continuously monitoring the area to avoid snow accumulation in apron area, keeping in view that stranded passengers may reach to their destination.”
Meanwhile, normal life remained standstill in Kashmir Valley even as there are reports of snowfall causing damage to a few more structures in the Valley. Most lanes are still impassable for driving across the Valley while main roads are being cleared, reports said. Snow clearance machine have been pressed to clear main roads, they said.
A MeT official here told GNS that Srinagar received 34.7cm of snowfall in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours while Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded 33.7cm during the time.
Pahalgam, the famous tourist destination, and Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded 29.0 and 17cm of fresh snowfall, the MeT official said.
Regarding Gulmarg, the official said that the world famous skiing resort accumulated 28cm of fresh snowfall while Kupwara recorded 22cm of snowfall. Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal and Budgam districts received almost the same snow depth as Srinagar even as higher reaches accumulated more snow.
The heavy snowfall also caused power disruptions and as per official figures revealed during a meeting chaired by advisor to LG Baseer Ahmad Khan through video conference last evening, at least 223 feeders are still to be restored apart from several 33KV and 11KV lines. A few community transformers have also been damaged.
The snowfall has also led to severe disruptions in milk and vegetable supplies to parts of Srinagar and elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.9°C while mercury settled at minus 1.2°C in Pahalgam, minus 3.5°C in Gulmarg, minus 0.2°C in Qazigund, minus 0.7°C in Kupwara while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.0°C, the official said.
Kashmir is in the middle Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day winter period which commenced on December 21 and ends on January 31. The period is considered the harshest of the winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum.
The cold wave, however, continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day-long ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold). The weatherman has forecast more snowfall in the next 24 hours and a “significant” improvement in from January 6.
The Weatherman has forecast a significant improvement in the weather conditions from this afternoon. “Weather is improving gradually, significant improvement is expected from today afternoon onwards but light rain/snow will occur at scattered places of Jammu and Kashmir for next 24 hours,” Director Meteorological department Sonam Lotus said. “For now, there is no forecast of any major snowfall,” he said, adding, “From tomorrow, weather is likely to remain mainly dry.” (GNS)
In an unfortunate incident, 22-year-old girl died after suffering massive heart attack in kandi Baramulla on Wednesday morning.
An official told hear that a 22-year-old girl name withheld a resident of Bandi Bala kandi Sangrama village of Baramula district died due to heart attack.
The official added that the girl suddenly suffered massive heart stroke and was rushed to nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Meanwhile, police in this regard has registered a case and started further investigation.
